Walking foot sewing machine in action

Short video showing a walking foot sewing machine is operation. Watch as the feet climb over a second layer of leather, go around, then climb down again. This machine has triple, or compound feed, where the needle, the inside presser foot and the bottom feed dog all move together. The outside presser foot applies pressure to the material between stitches, to prevent it from moving on its own. This is the best feed system for thick work that encounters new layers of significant thickness. Leather sewing, such as the veg-tan belt leather shown in this video, requires either a walking foot or jumping foot, needle feed system, to climb over new layers and to keep layers from dragging and separating. Walking foot machines are most often used in the upholstery, automotive, marine and leather sewing trades. They are also used to sew denim garments. Note, that this is a real walking foot machine, where the inner foot pulls the material along with the needle and feed dog. Do not be fooled into thinking that a so-called walking or even feed attachment for a home sewing machine can even come close to this operation.
